DR. MATT KANAAN | DUKE MEDICINE TRAINED

High Dose Custom (PRP) Platelet-Rich Plasma

Is all PRP the same? Does concentration matter? Does customization matter?

All PRP is defintely not the same. There are many clinics that claim to do PRP injections, but they probably are not concentrating the PRP quite enough.

Your age and your severity does change how much we concentrate your PRP. A younger person might be fine with 2-3X concentration. But as we age we might need upwards of 10x concentration. More severe pain or Chronic issues might also do better with HIGH DOSE PRP.

For the most part we have stopped performing low dose PRP (concentrations at 1-2x).

We offer both High Dose PRP , and Double Dose PRP, both customized to your problem.

PRP is not a one size fits all. Every patient is different and needs the right dose, volume, and concentration for the best results.

Is High Dose PRP better than standard PRP? YES it is…

For older patients higher dose PRP is probably superior to standard PRP. This is due to the number of available platelets and the concentration.

Where do we stop ? Should we aim for 20x -30x concentration?

There is probably a limit of diminishing returns on PRP concentration. More is probably better, but beyond a certain point it probably is just overkill.

We shoot for close to 4x on our high dose PRP, and around 10x for our double high dose PRP based on the current studies. We can go as high as 20x, but this is not necessary in most of our patients. We do believe that younger patients probably need less concentration, and older patients need more concentration, and that makes a lot of sense.

Dr Kanaan feels as though PRP is very custom to the patient, and his team will have a discussion about the goals for treatment and the concentration desired.

Is High Dose PRP better than Stem Cell therapy?

High Dose PRP may be equal in the pain relief that it provides compared to bone marrow and adipose stem cells.

PRP is also less invasive and less costly than stem cell procedures.

For the majority of our patients, High Dose PRP will work just as well as stem cell injections at a lower cost to the patient.

What if I tried PRP and it didn’t work?..

Many patients might have tried PRP in the past, but the dose of PRP does seem to matter we are finding. Higher concentration probably helps more than we originally thought. 1-2x PRP concentration with a regular PRP kit might not be sufficient.
