What is a Nonsurgical Sports Medicine Specialist?
There are 2 recognized Sports Medicine Physicians, both of which must complete an extra year of training (fellowship). One is within the orthopedic surgery field, and the other is within the primary care fields. Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialists focus on the nonsurgical treatment of musculoskeletal conditions while also addressing many general medical concerns such as nutrition, performance, psychology, and sport concussions.  Since roughly 90% of all sports injuries are nonsurgical, the goal for the Primary Care Sports Medicine physician is to maximize non-operative treatment, guide appropriate referrals to physical and occupational therapies, and if necessary expedite referral to an orthopedic sports surgeon.
