What is TRILURON®?
TRILURON is a knee lubricant that is used to treat patients who suffer from osteoarthritis. TRILURON is advised for patients who have seen little success managing their osteoarthritis pain with physical therapy and pain medications.
This treatment is great for patients who don’t respond to other joint lubricants and injections (Hyalgan, Supartz, Euflexxa, Orthovisc, Synvisc).
How is TRILURON® Given?
TRILURON® is a viscous solution that contains hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in high amounts in your body’s joint tissue and joint fluid. The substance is injected directly into your knee and once injected acts like a lubricant and shock absorber.
The injections will be administered at weekly intervals for a total of 3 injections. It is advised that you receive the 3 injections at one week apart.
Proper placement of HA into the joint is essential in order to obtain beneficial effects. Therefore we ALWAYS use ultrasound guidance to verify the needle placement.
How Long Will Pain Relief Last?
Patients have seen relief from their osteoarthritis for up to 6 months.
Will I Have Any Down Time?
Unlike the weeks of recovery and pain from joint replacement, TRILURON can have you going about your day in almost no time at all. The injections are performed same-day and are painless. After each injection patients can resume their day as normal.
Is This Procedure Covered By My Insurance?
Good news! This treatment is now covered by Medicare. This treatment is covered by most insurance plans with little to no cost to you, depending on your coverage. Prior to your appointment, contact your insurance company to discover whether TRILURON is covered for you.
